**Bates** is a boss in //Oh So Hero!//

When the player arrives at his location, a cutscene is started where Bates bumps into [[Joe]]. They engage in a conversation that starts with [[Joe]] admiring Bates' dragon features, mentioning that he never thought he'd ever find a dragon like himself, with Bates obviously being confused that [[Joe]] doesn't really look like a dragon, calling him instead a blue cow man.

[[Joe]] then challenges Bates to a friendly battle that Bates takes up on as a challenge of Strength and //Charms//, this then starts his Boss fight.

===== Appearance =====

Unlike [[Joe]] who superficially resembles a dragon, Bates is a tall and extremely muscular anthropomorphic dragon with red scales, expansive white horns, and large bat like wings which he can use to fly. His only articles of clothing are a white kilt with gold embroidered edges and a rokushaku fundoshi.

===== Locations =====

Bates can be encountered in [[Lood City Park]] in front of the Fountain in the center. Conveniently, a Life Spring is placed next to the fountain for [[Joe]] to heal himself with before challenging Bates. The player will be locked into the area until the fight is over. Befitting of a boss, Bates has a massive pool of health and a wide array of abilities and characteristics that far surpass any other enemy in terms of power and challenge level.

===== Attacks =====

The following are a list of Bates' attacks:
  * **Double Axe Handle** -- Bates will leap up into the air and slam down with both of his fists raised. This will cause a geyser of energy to surge above and around him. Can be avoided by running away from him or sliding under him.
  * **Fiery Fastball** -- Bates will conjure a fire ball in the palm of his hand and throw it across the arena. Can be avoided by jumping over it.
  * **Dragon's Flare** -- Bates will perform an uppercut and an explosion of fire will be set off around him. Can be avoided by keeping your distance from Bates.
  * **Dragon's Rush** -- Bates' grapple. He will rush forward from one side of the arena to the other, grabbing Joe in the process. Can be avoided by jumping over Bates after he starts the rush.
  * **Sex on a Meteor** -- Bates' seductive taunt. He starts by flexing his muscles, then exposes his genitals, and finally turns himself around to flex and pose while showing off his rear side. During this time, a swarm of hearts appear above him and diagonally rain down upon the arena.

As Bates takes damage, he will enter not one, but two awakened states, enhancing some of his previous attacks while gaining new ones:
  * **Triple Geyser** -- The enhanced form of **Double Axe Handle**. Unlocked after his first awakening. Bates performs up to 3 Double Axe Handles in rapid succession.
  * **Burning Beam** -- The enhanced form of **Fiery Fastball**. Unlocked after his 1st awakening. Instead of a single projectile, Bates shoots a fast beam that instantly covers the entire arena. Must be avoided by jumping straight up right before he fires.
  * **Mega Flare** -- The enhanced version of **Dragon's Flare**. Increases the Blast Radius of the explosion.
  * **Giga Flare** -- The ultimate form of **Dragon's Flare**. Unlocked after his 2nd awakening. In addition to the increased size 3 fire balls will begin to orbit around Bates increasing in speed and distance.
  * **Dragon's Claw** -- A short range version of Bates' grapple, however the hit box is higher than **Dragon's Rush**, allowing him to catch Joe out of the air if he tries to jump over him while he is doing this move. Can switch between this move and **Dragon's Rush** to confuse players after his 2nd awakening.
  * **Supernova** -- Bates ultimate attack. Unlocked after his 2nd awakening. Creates a massive ball of fire that floats over the fountain in the center of the arena. The ball will then release a barrage of smaller fire balls in all directions. After which, Bates will hurl the ball directly into the center of the arena, dealing massive damage and creating a vacuum effect. Almost impossible to avoid, but he will become slightly winded immediately after using this attack, making him vulnerable. 
  * **Fire Pellets** -- Bates throws a small fire ball above the fountain. After a brief delay, the fire ball will fly up and 5 pellets will rain straight down with small gaps in between them.
  * **Sun Dial** -- The 1st awakened form of Fire Pellets. After a brief delay, the ball will begin shooting pellets rapid fire in one direction. The ball will rapidly rotate clockwise, changing trajectory to sweep the entire arena.
  * **Cross-Fire** -- The 2nd awakened form of Fire Pellets. After a brief delay, the ball will fly up and 8 fire pellets from both sides and 2 pellets from the top will converge to the bottom center of the arena.
  * **Firework** -- The 3rd awakened form of Fire Pellets. After a brief delay dozens of pellets will explode and fall from the ball in all directions before falling down, muck like a firework.
  * **Flamethrower** -- The 4th awakened form of Fire Pellets. After a brief delay, the fire ball will move to either the left or right side of the arena. After which it will release a wave of fire pellets that fan out towards the center of the stage.
  * **Dragonflight** -- Bates will fly up in the air, hovering above Joe before diving straight down on top of him. Acts as a 3rd grapple that does a mix of physical and lust damage.
  * **Double Team** -- The awakened form of Dragonflight. While using Dragonflight, will create a series of afterimage clones that dive down alongside Bates. Getting hit by any of the clones will result in Bates grappling Joe. 

In addition to all the aforementioned moves, Bates possesses a large amount poise and cannot be defeated or even incapacitated by [[Joe]]'s sexy taunts. Instead, upon reaching maximum lust, Bates takes more damage. When Bates' poise is broken, the player can perform a combo to knock him down and fuck him causing him to take a decent chunk of damage. This amount is increased if the player manages to max out his lust before knocking him down. 

===== Strategy =====

When fighting Bates, it should be noted that while many of his attacks are difficult to avoid, most of them do not do all that much damage. Joe can and should focus on whittling away his poise to knock him down and deplete his health more effectively. However, Bates' grapples, especially his Grapples against a swooned Joe do massive damage and increase lust at a remarkably fast rate.

It is recommended that, to defeat Bates, you focus on hit-and-run tactics. After Bates' last attack, try to perform Joe's basic combo on him as many times as possible before retreating, with maybe a seductive taunt or two in. If you manage to manage Bates fall down, engage in sex with him. Do not attempt to attack him while he is performing **Sex on a Meteor** or **Supernova**, since he cannot be knocked over while using them. Also, keep an eye out for when he uses **Dragon's Rush** or **Dragon's Claw**. While it may be tempting, it is not recommended to use Joe's Butt Stomp here; positioning it over Bates may be difficult and the end lag will leave Joe vulnerable, especially since many of Bates' attacks are designed to hit Joe while he's in the air.

On top of these, it is recommended that the player visits [[Korko|Korko's shop]] in [[Smol Beach]] to buy themselves the temporary buffs that are only available at that location.

===== Updates =====

Bates was introduced in [[changelog_v0.20#Oh So Hero! v0.20.002|version 0.20.002]] in his Beta form, where his fight was mostly complete but missed some animations, attacks, and most notably, ending and Game Over scenes.

With [[changelog_v0.20#Oh So Hero! v0.20.200|version 0.20.200]], Bates received his **Fire Pellets** move. He then got updates to his **Sun Flame Desperation** and **Smash attack** moves with [[changelog_v0.20#Oh So Hero! v0.20.300 (+ Android Options Fix)|version 0.30.600]].

The animations that hadn't made the cut with his Beta release got added later. His intro and ending cutscenes were added in [[changelog_v0.20#Oh So Hero! v0.20.603|version 0.20.603]], and the Game over animation and cutscene were added in [[changelog_v0.20#Oh So Hero! v0.20.701|version 0.20.701]].

Bates' fight has been getting small bug fixes in later updates as well. 

===== Trivia =====

  * Bates is currently the first and only boss in the game, his inclusion signifying the ending of Act 1.
  * Differently from normal enemies, Bates being a boss means he can have more than one grapple, 4 physical attacks, and he's the only enemy that can survive the player grappling him.
  * Bates is a dragon like [[Joe]]. However, Bates looks like a traditional dragon as opposed to Joe, who mostly has various draconic features juxtaposed by traditionally non-draconic features.
  * Bates' moveset is actually highly akin to [[Joe]]'s; his seductive taunt involves showing off his penis and hindquarters, his Double Axe Handle is similar to Joe's Butt Stomp, his dash is essentially another version of Joe's slide, and his Fireball and Flare share a similar function and relationship to Joe's basic combo and Crescent Moon Special.
  * Bates can breathe fire, but none of his attacks actually make use of this ability.
  * Bates might be named after, or at the very least inspired by, //Dungeons & Dragons//' or //Final Fantasy//'s interpretation of Bahamut.
  * Bates was originally planned to be a mini-boss before being upgraded into a Full-fledged Boss.
  * Bates is one of the few characters to make a comment on [[Joe]]'s non-dragonic appearance, another character being [[K.Ren]].
